Overall Objectives: To contribute towards protection and promotion of rights of detainees and prisoners in Nepal in accordance with international human rights instruments.
Specific Objectives: "To prevent torture and ill-treatment of detainees and prisoners, and their possible long-term impairments due to imprisonment"
Result:
Expected Result 1: Strengthened knowledge and capacity of prison authorities and law enforcement bodies to implement minimum standards of detention and imprisonment.
Expected Result 2: Increased access of detainees and prisoners to knowledge about their rights and to essential services to ensure decent living conditions.
Expected Result 3: Appropriate policy decisions made by government to prevent torture and ill-treatment and address its consequences.
Key Activities:
Support independent monitoring visits of appellate judges (under provisions of the law) to make them meaningful mechanisms for improving conditions of detention.
Orientation to detainees and prisoners on their rights and duties.
Support prisoners through personalized support (Legal and Paralegal support).
Improve management of infirmaries.
Support activities led by prisoners to improve infrastructures, especially hygiene facilities.
Propose a set of activities for prisoners including hygiene promotion, emergency health, educational and socio-cultural activities and support groups, livelihoods activities.
Development of space for expression of interest.
Design and implement an advocacy campaign for the improvement of living conditions and treatment in prison.
Action coordination meetings.
