Promoting Human Rights of Detainees and Prisoners in Nepal

Overall Objectives: To contribute towards protection and promotion of rights of detainees and prisoners in Nepal in accordance with international human rights instruments.

Specific Objectives: "To prevent torture and ill-treatment of detainees and prisoners, and their possible long-term impairments due to imprisonment"

 

Result:

Expected Result 1: Strengthened knowledge and capacity of prison authorities and law enforcement bodies to implement minimum standards of detention and imprisonment.

Expected Result 2: Increased access of detainees and prisoners to knowledge about their rights and to essential services to ensure decent living conditions.  

Expected Result 3: Appropriate policy decisions made by government to prevent torture and ill-treatment and address its consequences.

 

Key Activities:

  • Support independent monitoring visits of appellate judges (under provisions of the law) to make them meaningful mechanisms for improving conditions of detention.

  • Orientation to detainees and prisoners on their rights and duties.

  • Support prisoners through personalized support (Legal and Paralegal support).

  • Improve management of infirmaries.

  • Support activities led by prisoners to improve infrastructures, especially hygiene facilities.

  • Propose a set of activities for prisoners including hygiene promotion, emergency health, educational and socio-cultural activities and support groups, livelihoods activities.

  • Development of space for expression of interest.

  • Design and implement an advocacy campaign for the improvement of living conditions and treatment in prison.

  • Action coordination meetings.

  • District Project Advisory Committee Meetings.

 

Project period: 17 months (April 01, 2017-August 31, 2018)
