Sanitation Trailblazers: Resilient Children in Nepal (STRCN)


  • Effectiveness of children engagement as active agents in WASH, WASH Resilience and disaster preparedness for strengthening their own-self, their families’ and their communities’.
  • Differences and Changes in activities of individuals, children, teachers, parent teacher associations, school management committees, Rural Municipality, members and the staffs after the increased knowledge and awareness regarding safe and resilient WASH practices and disaster preparedness along with the Overall change in Outcomes.


Key Activities:

  • Empower children through mobilising child clubs in schools to promote WASH activities combined with raising awareness among children on WASH impact by disasters and conducting participatory Vulnerability Capacity Assessments.
  • Capacitate the school children as change agents and role models, linking school interventions in their respective families and communities.
  • Support children’s hygiene behaviour change including handwashing at critical times, use of safe water and treatment options, and menstruation hygiene management in schools.
  • Support the preparation on DRR informed School WASH improvement plans and its implementation while at the same time integrating WASH in education and ensuring all children, including both girls and boys as well as children with disabilities are reached.
  • Ensure that DRR and WASH resilience are incorporated in The School Improvement Plans, which will be vital in maintaining existing WASH facilities at schools.
  • Provide water filters in schools where water quality is hazardous. Water filters will be low-cost bio-sand filters that are easily maintained and expected to be kept functional many years.
  • Provide technical support to schools and municipality to demonstrate models for sustainable, resilient and inclusive school WASH facilities according to Government of Nepal’s WASH in School guideline.
  • Involve relevant people from health centres in conducting periodic health sessions on use and procedures of safe water during key periods like pre-monsoon season to minimise water borne diseases and enhance the importance of water treatment options.


Project period: 14 months (1st November, 2020 to 31st December, 2021)
