Technical Assistance to Implement Water Safe Communities in Karnali and Far West Province
Objectives: Declaration of Water Safe Communities in selected communities of Karnali province and Far West Provinces province through completion of training on Water Safety Plan to Water and Sanitation Users committees (WSUCs), demonstration of water safety plans, capacity building on establishment of water quality monitoring mechanism including water quality testing, facilitation of water safe community declaration processes and providing monitoring support to selected Palikas and civil society organizations along with inventory preparation of water supply schemes.
Key Activities:
- Capacity building of targeted Water Supply and Sanitation Users Committee’s (WSUCs) on Water Safety Plan (WSP).
- Capacity building of Palikas and CSOs on Water Quality Testing and monitoring.
- Formalization of MoUs on Operation and Maintenance (Sustainability Compact).
- Declaration of Water Safe Community.
Project period: 13 months (23rd August, 2019 to 30th September, 2020)
Project Location: Simta Rural Municipality of Surkhet district, Karnali Province, Kamalbazar Municipality of Achham district, Dipayal Silgadhi Municipality of Doti district and Dasharathchand Municipality of Baitadi district of Far West Provinces

Major Achievements:
- Completed WSP operationalized training to 27 schemes benefitting 23922 people.
- Completed Palika level Water Quality testing training to 78 people in four Palikas
- Completed Sustainability Compact with 21 Water Supply Users Committees from four Palikas for Operation and Maintenance of water supply schemes.
- 2 Communities from 2 water supply schemes declared as ‘water safe community’ benefiting 247 people.
- Water Safe Community Declaration of 2 Communities was done. On 17th February, 2020, Simta Rural Municipality organized “Water Safe Community Declaration Programme” and declared Simalgaun and Thakuritole community, the First Water Safe Community in Karnali Province in Nepal. There were more than 140 attendees in this event.
